Blog 9- Advisory Prep 3

1. State whether or not you currently have a mentor, and what the status of your interview is with that person (I have completed the interview, I have scheduled the interview, I have not scheduled the interview, etc).

I currently have a mentor, her name is Esmerelda Lopez, and we are scheduled for a interview sometime this upcoming weekend.

2. At this point, your research is probably guiding your studies toward more specific areas within your topic.  Name the area or two you find most promising and explain your reasons.

During my research I have found myself going into the direction of the power of makeup and how it can dramatically change a persons features. Im also going into the direction of the psychology that it holds to the public eye and how it can effect women in the work force.

3. What kinds of sources do you think will help you in the next month to gain more research depth?  Where will you go to get them?

Its not really sources that I'm concerned about but key words that can help my research and better the sources. But thats pretty much it, just using more key words to expand my research.

4. Write down a possible EQ.  Please don't worry about wording other than ensuring that it provides the option for multiple correct answers.  At this point, the senior team is most interested in understanding your thought process

How much power does makeup hold to the public eye?

Blog 8: Independent Component 1 Proposal

1.  Describe in detail what you plan to do for your 30 hours.
My plan for IC #1 is to help plan the hair and makeup designs for the upcoming drama play at Ipoly High School. I have helped in the past but this would require more involvement from myself and will ultimately give me enough hours to log and complete.
For this component, I was thinking of making sketches of hair and possibly makeup designs for each character and then put them to the test later on. From that point, I would document the progress of the looks and once the show date comes closer, I would take pictures of the final hair and makeup looks that made it into the production.

2.  Discuss how or what you will do to meet the expectation of showing 30 hours of evidence.
I already explained it in the answer above but basically make sketches, try them out, and document the process until the final look.

3.  Explain how what you will be doing will help you explore your topic in more depth.
There's a difference between theatre and everyday makeup. Theatre is more pronounced and out there, it can be fun and witty and creative too while everyday makeup can be redundant because its not changing that often. When doing theatre makeup, it can something fun to do because it can also challenge you, makes you think "How can I achieve that look in 30 seconds" during a scene change with only limited time to go from a boiling red crab face to cleaned up in a Cinderella dress. Theatre makeup is challenging and  I am ready to accept the challenge for senior project.

4.  Update your Senior Project Hours log.

2.  What five questions will you ask them about their background?

1. Do you plan on becoming a part time MUA (make up artist)?
2. What made you pursue Makeup Artistry?
3. What has been the most important lesson you have learned from Ruby Makeup Academy?
4. When doing a clients makeup, how do you visualize what they want onto their face?
5. What advice could you give me if I decide to consider this as a career option?

Blog 6- Advisory Prep

1. What has worked well for you concerning senior project this year?  What has made it a positive experience for you?

So far senior project has worked well in the sense of helping me narrow down what I want to focus on in hair and makeup. As we progressed into the first month of school it hasn't been hard yet, I thought research would be difficult, however, it has been quite interesting because of what I have found. I've discovered new ideas and things to look into when it comes to research and my independent components. Its been good so far with no complaints, I'm excited to see where this will lead me to by May for senior presentations. The experience has been nothing but positive, its fun to expand your knowledge on something you enjoy doing.

2. What are you finding difficult concerning senior project?  How can you adapt to make that portion work better for you?  How might the senior team help?

To be honest I haven't ran into any concerns regarding senior project, now that I have a better understanding of it. I think keeping up on mentorship and research checks are key really, if those are kept up on then the journey will be much easier.

Blog 5- Interview 1 Reflection

1. What is the most important thing I learned from the interview?  Is there anything I would do differently for other interviews?

The most important thing I learned from the interview was that the makeup industry isn't limited to just one broad category, but that it is an industry filled with many different types of creativeness. Without this industry existing movies wouldn't be able to portray characters that require special effects to give off the vibe the director wants. This interview showed me that makeup holds a special power that many people don't realize or appreciate that much. To be honest, there isn't anything I wouldn't really do differently, I felt like I addressed some great questions and got awesome responses.

2. Did I get additional resources and contacts?  What is the most useful?  Why?

Before I walked in I knew that RMA had makeup classes but what I didn't know was the many types they offered. They range from special effects to basic makeup artistry to airbrush application. Nicole Oceguera, the interviewee, suggested that I look into talking to more people that are recent graduates because they have more time to share what they learned and be able to demonstrate what it means to be an upcoming makeup artist while they move up in the industry. I am definitely interested in taking at least one of these classes to help me with my senior project and to get a better understanding of makeup artistry.

3. What makes my interviewee qualified to help me?

Nicole Oceguera graduated from Ruby Makeup Academy a year ago and is now spending her time working with RMA as a beauty stylist but still continues to expand her knowledge in the makeup industry by taking classes on Special Effects Makeup to learn how to make and apply latex and create flesh like wounds or burns. Ms. Oceguera is also very knowledgeable about what it means to be a professional makeup artist by explaining that using good products and practicing proper brush sanitation will leave a great impression on interested clients or customers. She's had hands on training and learning experience to be able to apply what she's learned onto a persons face whether that's beauty or special effect makeup.

Blog 4- House Advisory Prep 1

What I am hoping to accomplish through my senior project is to discover the power that makeup holds to transform a persons facial features. Many people see makeup as a way to hide their insecurities or imperfections but I see makeup as a way to be creative and to express your personality through eye shadows and lip colors. I believe makeup is a great way for creativity to blossom and to boost self-esteem which is something different from what many people see it as. Makeup should be about feeling good and confident, not about the misguided judgments of trying to look fake or be someone else, its about enhancing your already beautiful features and not being afraid to show it off. So by the end of the year, what I want to walk away with from my senior project is being able to understand that makeup shouldn't be thought as a way of deception but as a way to feel and look powerful.

Blog 3- First Interview Preparation

1.  Who do you plan to interview?  Why?

I plan on interviewing my mentor, Esmeralda Lopez, who is a graduate from Ruby Makeup Academy. The reason why I choose her as an Interviewee  was because she would be great to ask questions about the process of learning how to apply different makeup technics and styles based off of the knowledge and hands on learning she got at Ruby Makeup Academy. During my mentorship, Ms. Lopez already gave me a basic understanding of makeup application and what brushes are used for different looks etc. During this interview, I want to get a better understanding of the significance makeup holds to change a persons physical features.

2.  Five questions will be assigned to all seniors to ask.  What additional questions do you plan to ask?  Ask open-ended questions.

1. How do you feel about the power that makeup holds to change a persons appearance?
2. What makes makeup such a powerful tool?
3. That makeup look you have on is beautiful, what makes it unique?
4. Tell me what technics make a makeup artist's work professional?
5. Describe how you feel about power versus liquid foundation.

Blog 2- Summer Mentorship

1. List the contact name, phone number, and organization of the person with whom you volunteered.

Esmeralda Lopez
(909) 682-6377
Ruby Makeup Academy Graduate

2. What qualified this person as an expert in your topic choice?

Esmeralda is a qualified person as an expert in my topic because she has taken various makeup classes with professionals from Ruby Makeup Academy that provides hands on learning to their students, making Esmeralda knowledgeable of the makeup world and qualified to be my mentor. She has also taken courses on hair styling which is helpful to the hairstyle part of my topic.

3. List three questions for further exploration now that you've completed your summer hours.

1.  How much can makeup change the way a person looks?
2. What hairstyles and colors are most flattering on different face types?
3. How big is the makeup industry and what drives it to be successful?

4. What is the most important thing you gained from this experience? Why?

The most important thing I learned from this experience was that its okay to step out of your box and explore different options. For many reasons, like deciding that I wanted to pursue something different from most of my peers and to also have a fun senior topic that will motivate me. Senior year is as I expect to be very challenging and I know that my decision to go down the path of makeup can be tricky for some because of there being a lack of something important whether thats research or finding a great mentor, I am prepared for the journey and see where it takes me.

5. What is your senior project topic going to be?  How did mentorship help you make your decision?  Please explain.

This summer I was really determined to do my senior project on something  military based, but halfway through the summer I developed an interest in Makeup and Hair and decided to look into it as a possible senior project. When I started my mentorship with Esmeralda, I really enjoyed being in the world of makeup and learning simple techniques that can make an impact on a persons features. By stepping into this new world, I became passionate about it and was hungry to learn more about makeup artistry. During mentorship I felt that this would be different from other topics and would give me a chance to explore my creativity through makeup and hair.

In the picture below, I was a face model for Esmeralda. The look I am wearing here is actually one of her homework assignments she had to complete. Throughout the application process she showed me different techniques and makeup hacks that make the application cleaner.

Blog 1- Senior Final Lesson/Interview Reflection

1.  What three lessons were most helpful for you to see, and why?

The first lesson that was helpful and lead me to my senior project  was Cheyenne Harman whose topic was Dance. If I can recall correctly her EQ was what is the best  way for a dancer to prepare for a dance academy. Her presentation was the first one I watched and I honestly just had the idea of what I wanted to do for my senior project, I had thought it was this hard project but her presentation made me realize that I could do my project on anything I like.
The second lesson that was helpful to me was Ian Jam which was about Physical Therapy. His presentation was helpful because it made me realize why I shouldn't do my project on something in the medical profession. Don't get me wrong, his lesson was interesting and helpful but I couldn't see myself spending nine months on repetitive stuff.
The third lesson that was helpful to me was Ana Nieto  on Social Psychology. Hers was one of my favorites because her approach to it was enthusiastic and knowledgeable about her topic and she definitely had a good time with it.

2. List one thing that you learned about the senior project in interviews that will help you get off to a good start?

One thing that I learned through senior interviews was that its great to have more than one mentor because one person cant really satisfy  all the questions and experience you want to hear, everyone has different views on what a person should do etc. Which is why I strive for at least two mentors.

3. What topic(s) are you considering, and why?

The topic that I am considering for my senior project is Navy Preparation. The reason why I am interested in this topic is because after high school  going into the Navy is a career choice I am highly considering and I feel that by dedicating nine months to extensive research and mentorship will not only help me feel prepared but get a better understanding of what I will be getting myself into.

4. What EQ do you think might be interesting to consider in guiding a project like this? (Please don't worry about any sort of formula...we want this question to come from your genuine interest).

What is the best way for a civilian to prepare themselves for entering the Navy
                                                                     OR
What is the best way for a civilian to prepare themselves for entering the military

5. What are some ideas you have about finding summer mentorship?

Some ideas I have for mentorship this summer are heading down to the nearby Naval Recruitment Center and get an inside look as to what is expected of a future sailor and how one should be prepared. Based off of my findings of research, during boot camp Recruits are taught firefighting  skills so possibly  join the Fire Explorers  and get another mentor. Both of these potential mentorship will be beneficial to  building my senior project and I hope to accomplish getting them to help teach me the importance of this important decision I plan on making within a year.
